29 August, 2026 – Waiheke Island, New Zealand – People Like You by Monika Killeen is a clear-eyed novel about the conditions we inherit and the selves we perform to survive. In this spare, searching book, Killeen, a psychotherapist and writer, dedicates the story to her mother, with a moving tribute that offers to avenge the wrongs accreted on her people.
Through Hadley, Tahnee, Sam, Orla, Edna, and Maram, Killeen traces the arcs of cultural backgrounds, belonging, guilt, and reinvention. The stories of six women are unyielding and exact — each character a case study in how history lodges in the body and insists on being lived out.
The book asks a blunt question: what do you do when success and distance cannot erase what made you? Killeen answers with compassion and exactitude, mapping the childhood trajectories, the weight of culture and class, and the often-counterintuitive work of being seen with respect.
People Like You continues Killeen’s previous work, a braided mix of lived truth and imaginative invention, where memory and fact collide to make something truer than either alone. It is for readers who enjoy interior landscapes and moral dilemmas over a neat story. It’s meditation on living well amid the tug of shame and resentment, a book that turns a private testimony into a universal study on how we become and the price we pay for it.
Read it if you want your curiosity sharpened and your assumptions unsettled. To be intrigued about your own journey, to be inspired to figure out something you didn’t know about yourself. It is a lean and eloquent read.

Monika Killeen was born in 1976 in a small town in Slovakia. She left in 1995 to see the world beyond her country’s borders.
