Portland, OR – Mat Ellis, founder of Cloudability and Managing Partner of Sunny Ventures, has opened a fractional executive practice focused on Pacific Northwest SaaS, AI and infrastructure companies. Engagements include fractional CEO, fractional CxO and strategic advisory roles, with inquiries open through matellis.com.
Ellis founded Cloudability in 2011 alongside J.R. Storment and Jon Frisby. The company pioneered cloud cost management software and is widely credited with establishing FinOps as a formal industry category. Cloudability raised $44 million in venture funding before being acquired by Apptio and Vista Equity in 2019.
The fractional executive model, where senior operators embed part-time into leadership teams rather than taking full-time roles, has grown significantly since 2022, with companies between $3 million and $50 million in revenue increasingly using the structure to access experienced leadership without the cost of a full C-suite hire. Ellis is among a small set of fractionals who have founded and exited a category-defining company themselves.
“The companies I find myself wanting to work with are the ones where I can actually roll up my sleeves,” Ellis said. “Advisory is valuable, but there is a different kind of engagement where you are embedded in the leadership team, owning outcomes. That is what the fractional model enables and it is what I am focused on with PNW companies where I can be present.”
Ellis works primarily with Pacific Northwest companies across Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, with selective advisory engagements across the broader US. Focus areas include scaling SaaS companies, cloud infrastructure strategy, preparing for acquisition, early-stage go-to-market and AI product development. He also continues to serve as Founder and CEO of Sixty AI, Managing Partner of Sunny Ventures, Venture Partner at Oregon Venture Fund and Board Member at Finout.
A longtime supporter of the Portland startup community, Ellis was awarded the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network Tom Holce Individual Achievement Award in 2013 and has served on the boards of non-profits the Technology Association of Oregon, the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network, Catlin Gabel School and Help Autism Now Society, as well as private companies Finout and Twenty20.
